WHAT IS Nishijin-ori?

Nishijin-ori derives its name from "Nishijin" , a historic textile district in Kyoto, and "ori" , meaning woven fabric or brocade. We have spent years collecting vintage Nishijin-ori fabrics that are over a century old. Each piece is intricately woven using traditional techniques, often incorporating gold and silver threads. Depending on the complexity of the design, weaving just 10 meters (one roll) of Nishijin-ori can take weeks or even months. Originally, these exquisite textiles were crafted for kimono and obi (sashes), showcasing their rich heritage. This vintage Nishijin-ori is made from pure silk, giving it a luxurious texture and elegant sheen. The gold leaf technique used in Nishijin-ori is a distinctive feature, adding to its timeless beauty. Silk Nishijin-ori exudes a sense of refinement and embodies traditional aesthetics, but it requires careful maintenance. In contrast, polyester Nishijin-ori offers greater durability, easy maintenance, and excellent cost performance. Each material has its own unique charm, allowing you to select based on your needs and preferences. Due to their rarity and historical value, vintage silk brocades that are over a century old are highly prized and often come at a premium price.
